Oenomaus is a Nubian gladiator recruited by the lanista Titus Lentulus Batiatus, and trained by Doctore Ulpius. He had a wife named Melitta who served as body slave to Lucretia, the wife of Titus' son, Quintus. Oenomaus became famous as the only gladiator to survive combat against the legendary gladiator Theokoles.Despite being a slave, Oenomaus was happy with his life in the House of Batiatus. However, after Quintus revealed that he intended to install Oenomaus as Doctore in place of Ulpius, Ulpius attacked Oenomaus, and Oenomaus was forced to kill his mentor. Oenomaus became doctore in Ulpius' place. Some time later, Melitta died from drinking poisoned wine, which was intended for Titus. Quintus blamed his enemy, Tullius, for the death of his father, and Oenomaus joined Quintus in his plot for revenge. Tullius was brutally stabbed and buried alive beneath the newly built arena in Capua. As the new Doctore, Oenomaus oversaw the training of Batiatus' finest gladiators, including Crixus and Spartacus. Thanks to Oenomaus' instruction, Crixus and Spartacus were able to kill the long standing champion Theokoles. However, Crixus was badly wounded in the fight, while Spartacus was hailed as champion. Shortly after his victory, Spartacus drugged Oenomaus in an attempt to escape from Batiatus' house, but the plan failed due to the death of Spartacus' wife, Sura. From then on, Oenomaus would encourage Crixus to win back his title as champion. As Quintus' wealth increased, he revealed to Oenomaus that he intended to free him from the bonds of slavery, and promote him to Lanista. Oenomaus was overjoyed at the news, and assured Crixus that they would restore honour to the house that Oenomaus once loved. When Spartacus began his revolt against Batiatus, Oenomaus was the first to defend his master. However, he was shocked that Crixus jumped to spartacus' aid at the last minute and joined in the revolt. Crixus then revealed to Oenomaus that it was Batiatus who killed Spartacus' wife, and Lucretia had been abusing Crixus in order to secure an heir. Oenomaus was apalled by the violence that spartacus inflicted on the House of Batiatus, but ultimately, he chose to remain loyal to his fellow gladiators, and he stood by while Spartacus and Crixus took their final revenge against their masters.
