Murphy Cooper was born in Lamar, Colorado about 2054. She had never known a world without crop blight, dust, and famine, but was an extremely intelligent girl that shared an affinity for space and science with her father, Joe Cooper and defied the education system for their revised textbooks about the history of space exploration, most notably, mankinds landing on the moon. And she felt a ghost was haunting the bookcase in her bedroom, knocking books down.Murph was very close to her father and a spoiled, tomboyish daddy's girl, whose father left her in the spring of 2065 when she was 10 years old because he felt called for a mission to explore new planets and get the people to safety. She held a grudge for over 25 years for her father leaving her until she found out the truthMurph had gone to college, which very few had the privilege of, and worked and lived at NASA as a physicist under Dr. John Brand, the man that sent her father into space. She worked with him for years to try to solve the gravity equation to get people into space. At age 35, the same age her father was when he left, she found out from Brand as he was dying that the equation was already solved and could go no further and Murph felt betrayed by her father that he just left her and everybody to die while he went off to safety. But feeling the ghost was a being comforting her in her bedroom, she went back into it trying to figure out what was the meaning. It turned out she knows her father himself was the ghost and that he sent her the remaining data through a wristwatch he gave her before leaving, which she finds in her old keepsakes. Noticing the second hand twitching the way it is, she takes it and uses it to solve the equation.Murph had solved the equation and married Dr. Getty that was her friend and coworker. She never had children until she was almost 40 years old. Within the next decade, the space stations are completed and she gets them launched off Earth and people to safety and into space, with Cooper Station being the first one. She also has her old farmhouse restored and taken on there as well to be a museum exhibit. Sometime in her 80's, Murph, as well as many old friends and acquaintances of hers, conduct interviews about the old days in their childhoods of the blight, and have them put on video screens for the museum display. Murph knows for sure her father is going to return to her any day, but at the age of 97, her health is declining and she requests to be put in cryosleep until he returns. In 2154, almost two years later, Murph's father is found floating near Saturn, rescued, and she is taken out of cryosleep and is informed about it. She is living on another space station nearby and insists on making a journey to see him, despite her failing health. Murph reunites with her unaged father surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren telling her she knows about him being the ghost and tells him to go find Brand and begin colonization on Edmond's Planet. She dies soon afterwards, having lived a full life as the savior of humanity. Show less «
