Gus Pike is the son of Eliza Pike, and presumed to be the son of Abraham Pike. Eliza Pike was incarcerated in an Asylum by Abraham, and a young Gus was left without any parents. Gus adventurous spirit was present even then, and he decided to become a sailor and travel the world, visiting exotic places all over the globe, such as the West Indies and the Spice Islands. When his ship went down off the coast of Nova Scotia in 1904, Gus arrived back in Avonlea. Gus found temporary work at King Farm as a Handyman. The Kings eldest child Felicity King came to the hayloft where Gus was working, she was annoyed with how things worked out with a recent romantic interest named David Hawes, and specifically that she has yet to be kissed. To her surprise Gus kissed the surprised Felicity in the hay loft. He described the experience as Better then kissing my Dog, Gus then swung out the barn window, and onto the ground where he continued with his duties.Gus next job was working at the McCorkandale Cannery, and when Hetty King offered the cannery workers and education, Gus jumped at the offer. After a fire in the cannery that was blamed on Gus, he quit his schooling to pay of the damages. Hetty tried to persuaded Gus to return, however he felt he need to pay back the damage, and he reluctantly turned down the offer. At the Governors reception Gus played a song on his fiddle in honour of Hetty, a beautiful song that was well received by all especially Hetty. Gus then decided to continue his education, balancing both school and his position at the cannery.During Gus first meeting with the reclusive lighthouse keeper, Captain Ezekiel Crane, he discovered that the Captain was harboring his abusive father, Abraham Pike, who had recently escaped from prison. Abe had stolen Janet Kings wedding ring and gave it to Gus under the pretense that it was his mothers. It wasn't long before Hetty had released the ring that Gus has is in fact Janet's, and the town reacted in an uproar. Abraham intended to take Gus with him, but Captain Crane prevented this. A battle ensued on top of the lighthouse, which ended with Abe falling to his death. Captain Crane entrusted Gus with the Lighthouse and left Avonlea. Gus then began working at the White Sands Hotel. In 1906, a budding relationship between Gus and Felicity began to develop, however the relationship was still in its infancy. This began to change after Felicity convinced Janet and Alec to go to dinner at the White Sands Hotel so that she could arrange a romantic dinner alone with Gus. Alec eventually discovered Felicity's ulterior motives; Alec was enraged and scorned Felicity who ran away as a result. Felicity fled to the lighthouse, but was convinced by Gus to return home, after explaining his admiration and respect that he has for Alec King. Gus escorted Felicity home, and explained to Alec that his intentions are entirely admirable. This swayed Alec to let Felicity and Gus spend time together.Over the years Gus proposed twice, and eventually Felicity accepted, however Gus knew that this would interfere with her ambitions to attend medical school. He decided to leave Avonlea to work on the ship The Aunty Jane. While Felicity was attending medical school Gus happened to see her, and together they met a mysterious woman who Gus believed to be his mother, Eliza. Gus returned to Avonlea with the women and discovered she had photos of Eliza Pike hidden underneath the pulpit stone of the Avonlea church. Gus was convinced this woman was his mother, and that Ezekiel Crane could have possibly been his biological father. Gus decided to journey to Jamaica to find Captain Crane. Before he left, Gus proposed one more time, to which Felicity replied I will always be yours forever. A few months later, Felicity received word that the ship Gus was on, the Maid of Calais had gone down and all hands were lost.A year had passed, and the residents of Avonlea believed Gus to be dead. Felicity was trying to move on and was engaged to wed the new Avonlea banker, Stuart McRae. She received a call from a nurse in North Carolina, and that sparked the suspicion that Gus was alive and trying to contact her. Based on this information alone, Felicity and Hetty ventured to South Carolina to search for Gus. Her search seemed to be going nowhere until she found a shipmate of Gus's named Jimmy, who said that Gus stayed behind, on the ship, to signal for a rescue, and said that Gus drowned. This did not dismay Felicity, who continued her search for Gus. She found Megget Lydie who led them to where Gus was located. After the exhaustive and extensive search Felicity was reunited with Gus. However, upon seeing him, his expression remained cold and he furiously told her to leave. She found out that Gus was blinded during the wreck and was barely conscious when he was found. Gus told Felicity to get on with her life, but Felicity refused to leave for Avonlea without him. After some convincing and some pride-swallowing, Gus finally decided to return to Avonlea but was heart-broken when he found out about Felicity's engagement to Stuart MacRae.Felicity returned Stuarts engagement ring, explaining that finding Gus changed everything and Stuart left Avonlea. Gus went to a large hospital in Charlottetown to undergo a procedure that may return his eyesight. Gus survived the surgery, but the prognosis was unclear, it would take time before they knew if there was going to be a full recovery. While Felicity sat next to a seemingly unconscious Gus Pike, she asked him to marry her. A perfectly conscious Gus replied If that was a proposal the answer is yes , soon after Gus and Felicity were married. In December 1914, during the First World War Gus was serving as a Naval Telegrapher in Halifax, and he and Felicity were expecting their first child in 6 months.Biography posted on Sullivan Entertainments web site.
